Venous insufficiency of the lower extremities is a common medical condition that can affect 25% of women and 15% of men. It is an entity that is related to the malfunction of valves found within the veins of the lower limbs, which can fail due to various factors (heredity, obesity, pregnancy, hormonal factors, the effect of gravity, age, etc. ), causing that the blood does not follow its natural course from the feet towards the heart, but instead, has a reverse flow or reflux, exposing the venous walls to greater pressure, favoring their dilation and with it the appearance of the called varicose veins.

What are varicose veins?

.

Varicose veins are veins that have been dilated, possibly in relation to some degree of venous insufficiency, becoming prominent and in many cases visible and symptomatic, they can cover a wide spectrum, from small vessels commonly called spider veins or telangiectasias, passing through vessels of the median size known as varicose veins, up to large, prominent and tortuous looking varicose veins commonly found on the calves and thighs, but can also be seen on other parts of the body such as the genital and gluteal region. In advanced stages of the disease, venous insufficiency and hypertension can be associated with chronic ulcers that are difficult to treat.
